Sprint-Nextel $35 billion deal in works
Federal Communications Commission is considering an approval of the Sprint Corp. and Nextel Communications Inc. merger. About two weeks ago CEOs of both companies visited the FCC to insist on the on the deal so the companies could start plans for this years holidays.
The major concern of the commission is the deadline to offer 911 emergency services over the wireless carriers but nevertheless the approval of the $35 billion deal could come as soon as the end of this month.
Sprint also wants to eliminate competition, a pending suit and at the same time expand their ability to reach missing customers, by announcing it will purchase US Unwired, a Louisiana based wireless company, for $1.3 billion. US Unwired created a network of about 500,000 customers by covering areas still unavailable to Sprint. The company has a history of suits against Sprint including one for the Sprint-Nextel deal accusing the company of a violation to its exclusivity agreement. US Unwired announced yesterday that it will withdraw the legal conflict as part of the upcoming deal with Sprint.
Sprint-Nextel will face some obvious competition from companies such as Verizon Wireless and Cingular Wireless which last year purchased AT&T Wireless.
The upcoming deal, of which the FCC speaks as promising, will create the nation’s largest wireless only provider.
