Sprint to offer 3G service

Sprint says they will offer EV-DO (Evolution Data Optimized) service with speeds of 400kbps to 700kbps with peeks of up to 2.0 Mbps which will be online in 60 markets by late 2005 and about half of these will be up as soon as this month. By early 2006, when the national build-out is complete, the service will cover more than 200 strategic urban and suburban markets covering approximately 150 million customers.

Those markets will mostly be major metro markets, like major airports and dense business corridors for now but plans for more areas will follow. Announcing two PC cards with two plans ranging in $40 to $80 per month allowing 40MB and unlimited downloads, Sprint will try to compete with Verizon and their 3G network.

Spending 3 billion to bring the service to true 3G speeds, Sprint has a history of confusion when it released their much slower service few years ago calling it 3G. With 3G logos on every compatible phone it might bring uncertainty to existing Sprint customers and this past mistake might cost Sprint the battle in this 3G rollout.
